Scripps semester in Dc: Rebrand
Logo redesign and brand identity redesign
Redesigning the brand identity for the Scripps Semester in D.C. Program was a collaborative and research-driven process that focused on creating a more cohesive, modern, and recognizable visual identity while still reflecting both the program’s purpose and the larger Ohio University and VisCom branding systems. Working alongside fellow designer Zoe Geiss, we began by researching the existing identity and identifying areas where the branding felt inconsistent or outdated. We analyzed how the program was presented across social media, promotional materials, and student communications to better understand what was working and what could be improved.
From there, we developed mood boards and visual inspiration that combined elements of Washington, D.C., journalism, and Ohio University’s established branding. Our goal was to create a system that felt professional and connected to the Scripps College of Communication while still having its own personality. We recreated the logos entirely from scratch, experimenting with typography, hierarchy, spacing, and iconography until we found a direction that balanced clarity with visual impact. Throughout the process, we focused heavily on scalability and versatility so the logo system could function across multiple applications, including social media graphics, merchandise, presentations, and promotional assets.
After finalizing the logo direction, we expanded the redesign into a complete visual identity system. This included establishing typography standards, color palettes, graphic elements, and layout styles that aligned with both the Ohio University brand identity and the VisCom branding guidelines. We then created a variety of branded assets to demonstrate how the system could be consistently applied across digital and print platforms. The project strengthened my skills in branding, collaboration, and design systems while also teaching me how to create an identity that is both visually engaging and strategically functional.
